A Letter from
Joan Borsten

Author of The Malibu Beach Recovery Diet
and co-founder of the Malibu Beach Recovery Center

As the CEO of Malibu Beach Recovery Center from 2007 to 2014, I worked with our team of chefs and renowned neuroscientist Dr. Kenneth Blum to create a science-based diet that helps repair brains damaged by addiction. I witnessed firsthand the dramatic impact our healthy diet had on depressed, anxious people whose addiction to alcohol or drugs was so profound that they were compelled to enter a residential treatment program for 30 to 90 days.

In the course of a week, we saw their eyes begin to sparkle, their hair become glossy and their faces regain color. Around day 8, the fog that clouded their thinking began to lift, opening the way for them to go forward with lives that had been all but destroyed by substance abuse.

I remember one evening when I accompanied our clients to Alcoholics Anonymous. The secretary asked newcomers who had achieved 30, 60 or 90 days sober to come forward. When our clients rose, the stranger next to me said, “they must be from Malibu Beach Recovery Center — they all look so healthy.”

Now I’m thrilled to share this diet with you.

Whether you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, this cookbook brings the power of the MBRC diet into your home. I believe it offers a new dimension of healing to support you in your journey of recovery.

I wish each of you long-term health and happiness. Bon appétit!

Joan Borsten

The Malibu Beach Recovery Diet is a tool whose effect goes far beyond overcoming addiction. It can help give individuals their first chance at being happy and joyful — and sober — for the rest of their lives.
— Kenneth Blum, PhD, Editor-in-chief, The Journal of Addiction Research & Therapy

As someone who has devoted my life to the study of food and addiction, I know that this is much more than a cookbook. It is an important statement that diet is a central part of well-being, treatment and recovery.
— Mark S. Gold, MD, researcher and co-author of Food and Addiction: A Comprehensive Handbook
